They asked Perplexity’s sonar and sonar-pro models for the best products across 380 software categories and analyzed the 7,534 citations returned. The findings: 59.8% of citations point to domains ranked worse than #100,000 in the Tranco list, and 23.4% aren’t in the top million at all.
The worst offenders are three sites — wifitalents.com, worldmetrics.org, and gitnux.org — that appear to be a single operation. All registered through NameCheap between December 2023 and May 2024, all on the same Cloudflare nameservers, all using identical page templates. Between them, they’ve published 215,128 machine-generated “best [category] software” pages. Their HTML titles literally read “Facts & Grounding Page” — “grounding” being the technical term for the retrieval step these AI models perform. They’re not writing for humans; they’re writing for the machines that recommend to humans.
The report also found that guideflow.com — a vendor selling interactive product demos, not a review site — was the third most-cited source overall, ahead of Gartner. Its blog was cited 194 times across 96 categories it doesn’t operate in. Wikipedia, by comparison, was cited three times in 7,534. This is the SEO playbook applied to AI: flood the web with low-quality content optimized for retrieval, and let the models do the distribution. The fact that Perplexity’s two tiers returned byte-identical citations in 289 of 380 categories shows they share a retrieval layer — this isn’t independent corroboration, it’s the same broken pipeline sampled twice.
XENONnT Detects Faintest Neutrino Ever — 201 points
