A phone booth is standing at the corner of 3:30 and Ceiba in Black Rock City, Nevada — Burning Man — and anyone in the world can call it. Dial +1 (775) 557-4848 and a random Burner might pick up. Walk past it and you can call almost anywhere on the planet for free, five minutes at a time.

Built by Aaron Hopkins, the Playa Phone is an ordinary pay phone with the internals replaced to route calls over the internet instead of the PSTN. No payment required. The site shows live phone status: currently online, last successful call ended 14 minutes ago, 7 incoming and 6 outgoing calls in the last hour, 36 no-answer calls, 115 busy signals. No ads, no trackers, no data collected beyond what shows up on the phone bill.

There’s something genuinely compelling about a physical object that bridges the default world and the playa through a phone number. The SFGATE coverage and Reddit threads suggest it’s become a minor Burning Man institution. The engineering is deliberately minimal — replace the guts, connect to VoIP, put it in a desert — and the result is a piece of infrastructure that creates spontaneous human connection at scale. It’s the opposite of an app.


I Turned My Security Cameras Into an Automatic Bird Identification System

Jason Tucker repurposed three existing RTSP-capable security cameras to run BirdNet-Go, an open-source bird identification system that analyzes audio streams in real-time using local AI models. The whole stack runs in Docker on his home hardware — no cloud, no API calls, no subscription. His wife wanted to identify birds by song; he built a system that does it 24/7 automatically.

BirdNet-Go listens constantly and classifies species the moment a bird starts singing. It also detects bats and frogs. The recent addition of Google Perch v2 expanded species coverage from 6,000 to 14,795. The web UI shows real-time audio levels per channel, which helps with camera positioning and troubleshooting noise sources (AC units, wind). Tucker made his instance available to friends via his public domain behind Cloudflare.

The project resonates because it’s a perfect example of repurposing existing hardware for a completely different use case. Most people have IP cameras with microphones sitting outside doing nothing but motion detection. Pointing BirdNet-Go at the RTSP stream turns surveillance infrastructure into a citizen science platform. The fact that it runs on a Raspberry Pi and keeps all data local makes the privacy argument moot — there’s no argument because there’s no third party.
