The real story here isn’t “AI roots tablet” — it’s that Amazon’s update model created a device where the owner needed four AI models and $266 to exercise basic property rights. Slovakia’s national security service (NBU) issued an alert: NERO R-ONE traffic speed cameras, purchased as part of a €30 million EU-funded project, contain a backdoor that grants shell and network access via SMS from hardcoded Russian phone numbers. The cameras are rebranded versions of the Russian CORDON PRO.M, manufactured by St. Petersburg-based Semicon. They were acquired through a Cyprus shell company with fake certifications.

Beyond the backdoor, the NBU found the cameras had SecureBoot disabled (so firmware integrity is never enforced), the web management portal had multiple vulnerabilities, and live video streams were exposed without authentication to anyone who knew the broadcasting IP. The Interior Ministry initially denied the cameras were Russian and claimed they’d be on a closed network — neither claim held up.

This is a textbook supply-chain attack on critical infrastructure, funded by the EU itself. The cameras were allegedly being installed across 279 locations in Slovakia, with similar devices reportedly deployed in Croatia and possibly other Eastern European countries. The incident highlights a persistent blind spot: governments treat procurement as a cost problem, not a security problem.
